History of the region

В данной степной области находилась великая империя кочевников – Джунгария – и проходил Великий Шелковый Путь. В начале XVIII века Джунгарское ханство попало в зависимость России. 1943 год – печальная дата в истории калмыков – их депортация в Сибирь. В 1958 году, после реабилитации многострадального народа, происходит восстановление Калмыцкой АССР, в 1992 она становится Республикой Калмыкией.

Population

The capital is Elista. The city district is a territorial administrative unit. The population at the beginning of 2016 year is 278733 people. The density of population is not very large - 3,37 people / km². The ethnic majority is Kalmyks (57%), Russians - 33%, the rest 10% are residents of the southern republics.

Culture and religion

"Dzhangar" - the epic about the mighty heroes and their exploits - is the pearl of local folklore. In Elista, there are many monuments that are dedicated to the heroes of this work, as well as sculptural images. Buddhism enriched the Kalmyk culture with the enchanting light of philosophy and art. Monuments of Buddhist culture include:

• the famous Golden Gate. Tradition says that the person passing through them is spiritually purified and becomes on the right path;
• the architectural structure "Golden Buddha's Mansion" is larger in size than the European Buddhist temples;
• The picturesque Pagoda of the Seven Days adorns the central square of the capital. Each tier corresponds to the day of the week.

Thus, pagan beliefs are closely intertwined with Buddhism. In the republic there are also cultural centers of other peoples.

Natural Features

Суховей – одна из природных особенность Калмыкии. Дожди идут редко, в летнее время преобладают сухие и жаркие дни, в зимнее – морозные и малоснежные. Основной ландшафт – полупустыни, пустыни, сухие степи. Леса практически отсутствуют, поэтому большую часть флоры представляют степные и пустынные растения: тюльпаны, васильки, верблюжья колючка, ковыль, полынь.

The reserve "Black Lands" is a territory where hare-hares, corsacs, ground squirrels, marmots, jerboas are under protection. The picturesque Lake Bolshoy Manych is the second part of the reserve. It protects pelicans, swans, gray geese, cranes, gulls, swallows and other animals. There are reservoirs in the republic, as well as the rivers: East and West Manych, Dzhurak-Sal, Egorlyk, Kara-Sal, Kuma and Manych.

Kalmykia has a huge tourist potential, formed from the historical and cultural heritage of the Kalmyks, the natural heritage and the national traditions of the republic.
