The Republic of Komi

The Republic of Komi is one of the largest subjects of the Russian Federation. It is located in the far north of the federation and is part of the North-West District. The date of the founding of the republic is 1921, when the Komi was proclaimed a separate autonomous region.

Geographical features

In Komi there are many rivers, most of which are flat. Among the largest water bodies of this type are Pechora, Mezen, Vychegda, Usu rivers.

Also on the territory of Komi there are many highland and lowland lakes. Almost 8% of the territory is occupied by swamps, which are separate unique ecosystems. An amazing phenomenon here is the forests that cover the Northern Urals. It is here that the famous Pechora-Ilychsky Biosphere Reserve is located. He and several other similar objects, united by the name "Virgin Komi Forests", are included in the UNESCO heritage list.

Features of climate

Близость Северного Ледовитого и Атлантического океана в сочетании с Уральскими горами формируют на территории Коми довольно неоднородные климатические условия. Здесь традиционно очень холодная и снежная зима и короткое лето. Часто бывают сильные ветры, обильные осадки.
