The Kemerovo Region is part of the Siberian Federal District, on its territory there live about 2 751 000 people according to the data for 2012 year. The largest city of the region is Novokuznetsk, 1 150 000 people live on its territory and in nearby settlements.

Основная территория области лежит в Кузнецкой котловине, южную часть занимает Горная Шория, западную – Салаирский кряж, восточную – Кузнецкий Алатау. Самая высокая точка области – голец Верхний Зуб высотой 2178 м, находится около границы с Хакасией, а самая низкая – неподалеку от Томской области в долине реки Томь.

The Kemerovo region is rich in minerals, primarily coking coals of the highest quality are mined here. Also, brown coal, polymetallic and iron ore, phosphorites and gold are mined.

The climate is sharply continental, with a long, frosty winter, short and cool in summer. The rivers of the region belong to the basin of the Ob, the most significant of them - Tom, Inya, Kiya and Yaya. Soils are sod-podzolic, but the Kuznetsk basin is replete with chernozems with high fertility.

Растительный мир очень богат, в высокогорьях преобладает тундровая растительность, альпийские луга, на среднем и низком уровне гор встречаются растения-реликты, высокотравье, преобладают леса из осины и пихты. Предгорья и котловины между горами заняты растительностью степных и лесостепных регионов. Животный мир представлен лосями, косулями, маралами, водится и сибирский олень, но исключительно на территории гор Кузнецкого Алатау. Из хищников здесь живут бурые медведи, росомахи и рыси. Белки и ондатры представляют промысловый интерес, равно как и птицы – глухари, тетерева и рябчики.

Кемеровская область является одной из густонаселенных территорий Сибири, основной процент населения – русские, 90%, на долю сибирских татар, горных шорцев, телеутов и представителей других национальностей приходится всего 10%. Все народности сохранили свои национальные традиции, обряды и обычаи.

At the last, the first caprolactam production line in the USSR was launched.

In the region all types of transport communication are developed, water, air, road and rail. In large cities there are universities and colleges, theaters and other cultural institutions.
