Kabardino-Balkaria is a small republic in the North Caucasus Federal District, located in the south of the country. The Constitution approved three state languages: Kabardian, Balkarian, Russian.

The river network is quite developed, but its density in the mountainous areas is greater than in the foothills and on the plain. The following table shows the data of the largest rivers:

In the republic there are more than 100 lakes, a significant part of which belongs to small water bodies. The most popular for tourists are the Blue Lakes. Their total 5: Lower, Upper (Eastern and Western), Secret and Dry.
The bottom is the most interesting and unique lake (Figure 1). Located above sea level at an altitude of 809 m, a mirror area of more than 2 ha and a depth of 386 m.
The mountains, perhaps, occupy a special place among the sights of the CBD. Suffice it to mention the presence of 7 vertices, five-thousandths (Table 2).

Elbrus (Figure 2) is the highest peak not only in the Caucasus, but also in Europe. The date of the first successful ascent to Elbrus is 22 July 1829. The scientific expedition, organized by the Russian Academy of Sciences, was headed by G.A. Emmanuel. The first to the Eastern peak (5621 m) was K. Khashirov, one of the local guides.
The largest cities of the CBD are:
1. Nalchik is the capital of the republic. Year of foundation - 1822. Population over 230 thousand people. Known for its balneological and mountain climatic resorts.
2. Tyrnyauz, located at an altitude of 1200 m above sea level.
3. Cool - the second largest city, is an industrial center.
You can also name the city, with a population over 20 thousand people: Baksan, Terek, Nartkala, Maisky.
The population of the CBD is slightly more than 860 thousand people (01.01.2016). The overwhelming majority of the population are Kabardians (57%), Balkars (12,6%) and Russians (22,5%). In the republic also live: Ossetians, Turks, Ukrainians, Koreans and representatives of other ethnic groups.
One of the most interesting traditions of indigenous peoples is atalism. Boys, as well as girls, but less often, were given upbringing up to adulthood in another family. Almost to this day, the custom has survived - the kidnapping of the bride. But especially respectful and lasting is respect for the guest.
